The Ice Storm Goes On

2011 February 2
by bvoboril

It sounds like the whole Midwest has the same problem: ICE!

St. Louisans are completely obsessed with the weather today.  Everything is shut down and people are working from home, or in Stu’s case, the hospital.  Children’s Hospital has provided hotel rooms, cots, and many different sleeping arrangements for the nurses and doctors because many can not get home, and others came to work a day early in anticipation of the storm.  Apparently we are expecting 24″ of snow (or something insane like that).  But no matter what, we’ll be getting to the hospital tomorrow  — walking if necessary!

The storm aside, it was a stressful morning at the NICU because of another little baby’s health decline.  It’s awful to watch the situation unfold around us.  And the other babies are affected by the stress.  Ethan was pretty worn out today from the noise and action.  Stu and I even had to leave the NICU for a couple hours while a surgery was performed at the bedside.  We hope this baby will be better very soon!

Otherwise things are very good.  Ethan had a hearing test today and passed with flying colors.  The audiologist actually said he has the hearing and brain waves of a full term baby!  The hearing test was amazing…in a nutshell they play a series of clicks in the baby’s ears to test how the brain reacts to the noise.  Incredible.

Weight Today: 5 pounds 13.5 ounces

We’re hoping for a more quiet day tomorrow so Ethan can concentrate on eating and sleeping…and growing!

Getting So Big!

We think the following photos are funny…they show how much Ethan has grown out of his preemie jammies!  On the left, his sleeves are rolled up and he’s just swimming in the pjs.  On the right, we can’t even really put them on him, because they are no where near long enough.

It’s amazing how much Ethan has grown. It’s just absolutely wonderful. We hope the baby in the NICU is doing better and gets well soon.
Hope the ice doesn’t damage any of your trees. That is a lot of snow to receive.
Thanks for the pictures and information, we read it every day.

I love the comparison pics! It’s amazing how much they grow in such a short time, good job Ethan!

Good luck in the storm! It’s pretty crazy out there…And good luck in the NICU today, that is tough watching a baby go downhill. I remember feeling really guilty that Otis was doing so well when other babies had ventilators and stuff.

    Becky,
Seeing the pictures of Ethan and how much he has grown brought tears to my eyes. Ethan can do that to me pretty easily for a little baby. :) It is so amazing how well he is doing!! We are all so grateful that he is doing so good. Take care of yourselves.
