Superstition

Many people have asked me for Ethan updates, so I wanted to make a quick catch-up post.

Since we’ve become Parents of the NICU, we’ve learned that the nurses (and doctors too!) are very superstitious.  For example, they don’t like to use the “H-word” (home).  Instead, they say babies are going to be “visiting the zoo” or “going shopping”.  In addition, circumcisions are not done until the day before or day of discharge, along with any other go-home activities (like the car seat test).

And boy did I learn my lesson yesterday!  During rounds, the doctors decided that since Ethan had taken every drop of the last 24 hours worth of feeds, they would take out the feeding tube. They said if he could continue taking all of his bottles, he’d be on his way home by the weekend.  It was probably the most thrilling moment since Ethan was born!  So the feeding tube came out.  It was wonderful!  It was the first time I’d seen his little face without tape on it (for more then 20 seconds) since he was born.

But then I made the mistake of sharing the news with a few people.

Now I know I’m being silly… superstition is ridiculous…but sure enough, Ethan fell asleep with 20 mls left in his 3pm bottle, and the tube went right back in.

So, since we are SO close, we won’t really be offering up any information other then “He’s Great!”.  If superstition is what it takes to “go shopping” with Ethan, then that’s what we’ll do!

The next post we make will hopefully have REALLY good news in it. :)

Here are a few pics I snapped while the tube was gone…look at that cute little face!!

I just love his little fluffball hair :) I know it’s hard to wait, but when he’s ready it will be so awesome!! Our NICU drs never had a problem saying home, they just never ever told us a time frame, which was SO frustrating! Hope you get to take Ethan shopping soon.
