St. Louis Snow Story

2013 March 25
by Becky

After a pretty darn mild winter, St. Louis woke up to this yesterday.

TONS of snow. All day long huge flakes fell from the sky and completely covered everything.

My first thought? Awesome!

Second thought? Crap, all our winter stuff is in a truck, in storage, waiting to be delivered to our house next Friday.

All year long, after our uber-successful sledding day, we’ve been waiting to play in more snow. And here we have no gear! We literally have sandals, capri pants, and t-shirts mixed into our suitcases full of warm-ish clothes. I’ve been rotating three pairs of jeans and some yoga pants for over a week, plus at least three layers of shirts at all times in an attempt to stay warm.

So at first, when going outside for any amount of time seemed an impossibility, we just hung around in our trashed cluttered hotel room out in St. Louis county.

Let’s call it “cozy”. The animals are handling it great.

So after a morning of breakfast (provided daily by the hotel..amazing) and toys we broke out the plastic cups for some Hotel Bowling. Ethan thought it was amazing and spent a good 30 minutes rolling and stacking to his hearts content.

Then we played a few rounds of what I like to call “Go Touch XXXX then Come Back and Give Me Five”. It basically involves me telling Ethan to go touch something like the dishwasher, his shoes, the fridge, the dog, a toy, etc. and in between each thing run back and give me five.

It keeps Little Man entertained while burning some energy. Perfect.

He really gets into it.

We were pretty excited when nap time rolled around because it meant reading books, putting The Peanut down, and getting a few hours of snow-day-lazy-time for us parent-people.

Check out the disaster that is “Ethan’s Room”. (The pack n’ play is on the other side of the bed)

Little Man was down, things were nice and quiet, but I couldn’t stop myself from going on the hunt for gloves and hats to make playing in the snow possible. It was PERFECT packing snow…a snowman was in order.

So I walked outside bundled in everything I own to find my vehicle in this state.

Gloveless, I tackled the enormously heavy piles of snow to get my car all cleaned off. The next challenge was actually finding winter gear. Since it is technically Spring, Target was totally out, Dicks Sporting Goods had only a few adult-size fleece gloves for $50 a pair (Rip. Off.) and the West County Alpine Shop closed just before I arrived.

So in a last ditch I tried my fav, the place that has everything, Walgreens. And they didn’t let me down.

I grabbed six pairs of gloves (to double up) and three hats, all at $1.99 each. Deal!

When E awoke, refreshed from his long nap, we got ready for some snow.

Socks, long sleeved shirt, monkey pjs, jeans, fleece sweatshirt, fleece jacket, hat, and rubber boots. I’m still pretty much feeling like a super star for bringing those boots with us to Nebraska (he wore them EVERY DAY to tromp around the farm) and now we’re getting use out of them here in the snow.

Never leaving home without boots. Never.

Layered to the max, we headed out. Yes, I am wearing two hats.

Our first snowman came together in minutes with the perfect packing snow.  We found some better eyes for him later, but weren’t able to dig up the carrot that Ethan requested. No carrots at the Marriott.

He decided to feed the snowman some snow and then couldn’t help trying some himself. Mmmm, that slightly dirt-like snow flavor…who can resist it?

It was a pretty darn fun afternoon. Totally worth the treacherous drive on the hunt for gloves.

And hey, even our new house looks amazing in this spring winter wonderland.

Whoop! There it is. Since we close on Wednesday, I figured it’s safe to post a little sneak peek.

Words cannot express how excited we are to get into this place…the drifter life is not for us. We will waste not time moving in, even though the movers don’t arrive till Friday. House camping is way better than hotel living. Plus it will give us empty-house time to start mapping out our many projects. I’ve got a LOT of pent-up DIY energy to burn.

So by my next post, we will be home owners. Until then, I’ll be trying to keep Ethan busy in this crazy weather.

You make my day with your Posts.
Love the Monkey jams in the boots too.
And I think your New House looks like it would fit right into Old Alexandria as well.
    Great Transition.

LOVE the picture of your house – it’s gorgeous! Can’t wait to see more shots of the inside. That hotel suite is pretty nice looking but you can only take that for so long (on our move from west>east coast we spent 3+ wks on the road, so I feel your pain). Good luck with the closing.
