Snowing & Sledding…Ethan’s First!

2013 January 28

Sledding-RunIt snowed!!!!  Finally, it snowed. All winter we’ve been ready to show Ethan what the white stuff is all about.

Snow pants hung neatly in the closet. Sled waiting patiently downstairs.

And last Thursday we were graced with a little less than an inch of beautiful, perfect snow.

DC Metro shut down…schools were delayed which meant Ethan’s preschool was cancelled (since it only lasts three hours anyway). This city totally loses it over a few flakes.

At first I was bummed, thinking we’d have to spend the whole day trapped inside due to the cold.

But then the sun burst forth from it’s cloudy cover and by 9am it was BEAUTIFUL, glistening white crystals…a winter wonderland. No amount of struggling could keep me from getting Ethan’s new (consignment) coveralls strapped onto his little body.

Extra sweaters, coats, hats, and we were ready.

Ok, there was some hair adjustment involved, but after that we were ready. (I refuse to cut it, but we may need an itty bitty trim to avoid any vision-obstruction-related injuries.)

Eyes (mostly) unobstructed, he jumped in the sled and we headed off. The sidewalks were nice and snowy, very few neighbors had ventured out to clear our paths making for smooth sailing sledding.

We headed to a perfect hill where I knew there’d be kids—Lee Street Park.

I must be honest, I didn’t think Ethan would dig the down-hill sledding action. He’s not much of a “dare-devil”, usually shying away from physical or fast-paced activities. So when we arrived to just let him watch to see what this sledding thing was all about.

“Kids sledding Mama!!” he said over and over though his hyperventilating-breathing-excitedness. “Go down!” “Snow!”

I figured it was worth a shot, so we situated ourselves for a ride. Luckily, a nice parent offered to capture our big moment…

The kid was fearless!!!

He wanted to go “gain?” “More?” “Faster?!”

He was an animal.

Snow is this kids thing…he couldn’t get enough. Good thing I had jammed his huge hands into his baby mittens under his bigger mittens or his hands would have frozen. It’s impossible to find waterproof gloves in tiny sizes!

He thought the snowballs were THE BOMB.

His buddy Lukas showed up for some sledding too! Ethan couldn’t wait to take a ride down the slope with his friend.

How cute are these boys??!

We had an incredible morning and by 11:30 Ethan was pooped (I was too). By the time he woke up from a nice, long nap, the snow was nearly gone. I’m still TOTALLY shocked Ethan enjoyed the downhill speed…just when you think you have them pegged, they change.

Hopefully we’ll have another chance to sled! Nonetheless, I’m so glad the sun granted us this perfect day…without it things wouldn’t have been quite so fun.

Have you gone sledding with your kiddos this winter? Did they like it?

Love these pictures! So great that you got to go sledding. I love the snowball pictures!

I refused to cut Sully’s hair for the longest time. Until he ran into a corner of a patio chair due to a curl in his eye, two days after one of his preschool teachers braided his hair out of his eyes. It was time.
