Rug Romance

2012 January 23

Now that we are all (hopefully) over the horrific stomach flu that ruined our whole weekend, I got to start working on my latest project! I can’t wait to share it with you.

You’ve probably seen chevron stripes everywhere—holiday cards, wall art, clothes, pillows, sheets, curtains, and of course rugs. I’m sure they are “on their way out” according to the design pros, but I can’t help but be obsessed with these pretty little zig zags. I LOVE me some chevron stripe.

So, during my bedroom spruce up project, I decided I needed a black and white chevron stripe rug. I was inspired by these:

from west elm

from overstock.com

from amazon.com

from cape 27 blog

You get the idea.

But these rugs are pricey, all over $150 (expect the last one, it’s a DIY!). And large too…I only needed a runner style rug. So I’m doing what so many others have done—I’m making my own.

While I’d love to point you toward a tutorial that works perfectly and has step by step instructions, I really just can’t. No matter what anyone says, taping out the stripes is HARD. A few fellow bloggers described their rug painting projects but breezed right over how to get the flipping stripes straight…it’s the most difficult part!

So here is my take on…

I’m not very confident with measuring—it stresses me out and I have to check my numbers about 20 times. So getting these zigs and zags perfect was going to be tricky. Therefore I tried several different methods, practically breaking my back in the process, spending hours bent over my Ikea Nastved rug ($19.99) trying to get perfect stripes.

I tried taping.

I tried taping a different way.

I got one stripe that was perfect, but how would I duplicate it numerous times?!

Finally I traced my template onto wax paper, made a whole bunch of these “stencils”, and ironed them onto the rug, waxy side down. This wasn’t something I’d seen on any other sites, but knew about from other stenciling projects. It worked like a charm, but was still quite time consuming.

So now all I have to do is paint. I visited our local Ace Hardware last week with Dewey and Ethan in tow, but got flustered when the sales person insisted I choose one of the dozen black tints they had to offer (isn’t there just “black?!”). I did know that I wanted Benjamin Moore interior latex in eggshell though! So I brought my chips home to make sure the prefect black was chosen. They all looked the same!

I chose “Black Beauty”, based only on the name. A very educated selection, no?

Hopefully I will be sharing the finished product with you soon!! I guess I’ll need to include pictures of our bedroom soon too…got to reveal our very cool (and inexpensive) progress!

See the finished project here!

Anyone else paint a rug lately?
