New Year, New School, & New York

2013 January 10

I don’t think I’ve said it yet as I was so overly excited about posting Ethan’s “Manly” Kitchen, so:

Happy New Year!!

It seems everything is new! Except, that is, my sense of motivation…that was left back in 2012. Hopefully my ambition will be back soon, but it’s been a slow start.

Something new is that Ethan started “Pre-School” on Tuesday this week! It’s actually a “Parent’s Morning Out” program but it’s structured like a pre-school so hey, it counts!

He was a tiny bit  clingy when we first arrived (for about two seconds) then took off for the toys. It helps that one of his best buds Luke is in his class—at least there was a familiar face! I won’t lie…I cried like a big big baby after dropping him off and called Stu questioning our decision to send our boy off to school when I am perfectly capable of handling it myself at home. Then we got back to the point of socialization and this being really good for him and I felt better. But still a little weepy.

When I picked him up the teacher said he did everything: art, toys, playground, puzzles, snack. He was a happy guy. Until, that is, he saw the first mom arrive which made him burst into tears. Luckily I was coming down the hall so things got cleared up pretty quickly! All happy again.

A before school shot:

The backpack is on the floor in both pictures because, after being SO excited about it, he refused to wear it on school day. So I carried it. There is just something about taking a backpack to your first day of school.

The school is exactly two blocks from our front door, which is THE BOMB. He will go for three hours every Tuesday and Thursday…when he isn’t sick. Of course, our very first week, he got a little stomach bug on Wednesday and had to miss his second day of school. UGH!  What’s weird is he had this same bug a year ago almost to the day.

Luckily this was the 24 hour variety but included constant crying, no appetite, a slight fever, and puking all over himself in the car—one of my biggest parenting fears. Gross. At least I learned how to disassemble the carseat cover for cleaning!

He woke up this morning 150% better. But, since a fever was involved, doc said no school for 24 hours. Good thing the sun is out, it’s not too cold, and we were able to spend most of the morning outside. You’d never know this kid had been totally incapacitated yesterday.

Another “New” thing was our trip to New York last week which so many people have asked about but, again, my motivation is just not where it should be and I’m still editing photos. I promise to have them up soon! Those of you on Instagram with me have seen a lot of New York stuff—I was an iPhone picture-takin fool. (If you aren’t Instagramming, you should be! Follow me @bvoboril.) The super cute elephant backpack was actually a gift we brought Ethan from NYC—we couldn’t resist stopping in FAO Schwartz.

Hope your weekend is fabulous like ours is supposed to be!

When did your kiddo start pre-school? Did you do any sort of Parents Day Out program?

Yay for Ethan! Henry goes to a Montessori school for 2.5hrs a day three days a week. I know when he first started I too was so tearful and wondered if I was doing the right thing (I was in Walgreens just standing there in a haze like ‘what do I do now?!’), but it has been GREAT and he loves it. He has learned so much in terms of socialization, cleaning up after himself etc and I am sure your son will totally dig it and reap the same benefits. Such a big milestone for you!

That is so funny Jen, I did the same thing at Michael’s while trying to return unused birthday stuff…I just zoned out. The cashier thought I was nuts till I told her and she yelled “Awwww!!! Are you ok??!!” It was hilarious. So glad Henry likes Montessori!! We may be looking at one of those very soon.

Just thought I’d put my nose in for Montessori–we LOVE it!! Next fall Otis will be too young, but he’ll start K3 the fall after and I can’t wait! Ingrid has really loved it, too. I hope you find something around you guys for Ethan!
