Goodbye Curls: Ethan’s First Haircut

Ethan’s been getting “She’s so pretty” for a while now, but his long hair never really bothered me until Monday morning, when he woke up with what looked like Pippi Longstocking pigtails on each side of his head. The hair was sticking out so far and it was doing this half curly/half wavy thing. It was just looking rough. Very mullet-ish.

After talking about trimming The Peanut’s hair for months, I finally broke down. And I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I gave him a sucker, sat him on the floor in front of me, and started cutting away.

And now for the after…

Pretty good, right?!

(That’s drool all over his shirt…he’s currently cutting his “fangs”).

I’m no hair wiz. I’ve been “cutting” Stu’s hair for the last six months or so. That doesn’t count because it’s done with a buzzer…hard to mess up. While I’ve never taken scissors to anyone’s locks before, I had a few thoughts on how it was done. My confidence was really boosted after watching a randomly-well-timed-video-post of Sherri from Young House Love  cutting her husbands hair. She used scissors and confirmed my theory of cutting sections of hair vertically instead of horizontally.

I thought, “I can do this!”

And let’s be honest. I was also prompted to do it my self because I was a) scared the professional would take off too much, and b) didn’t want to spend upwards of $30 on my 16 month old’s hair cut. My over-protective cheapness made the decision for me.

I started by combing water through his hair to dampen it. Beginning with the very back, I combed small sections of hair out vertically, held the section between my two fingers, and trimmed a little off the ends. I did one round of this and stopped, let it dry, and assessed the situation. It was even MORE girly because the curls caused a “flip” in the back, reminiscent of my curling iron days in middle school.

So began trim Round 2. I wetted his hair, trimmed more. By the time his sucker was gone, he was looking like a very handsome, clean cut, professional little man.

Turns out I COULD do this! Anyone can.

But see? There is still some “party” in the back. I had to leave a little of the length. It’s just so cute!

I should have amazing photos of Little Man getting his hair cut. Pictures of him enjoying his sucker. Of the hair all over the floor. Of the scissors snipping away. But because I was hit with the sudden impulse after Stu left for work, I don’t have any of these shots. I’m trying to let that go…not everything has to be captured on film.

I just can’t get over how much OLDER he looks. Stu did a triple take when he walked through the door that night…he couldn’t believe the difference!

I think the “older” look is getting to Ethan’s head…he did a great job eating yogurt with a spoon yesterday.

Have you ever cut your spouse or child’s hair? Any disaster stories?

Little man is now truly a “little man” boohoo. What a difference a hair cut can make.

I just cut Lorelai’s bangs myself the other day while she was in the bath … she wiggled too much and they ended up short and oddly chunky. They’re not terrible, but I need to find a better distraction method. Perhaps I’ll try a lollipop too next time!

I’ve deemed suckers “shut up sticks”, especially after our non-sleep flight yesterday. It gave the rest of the plane (and us) a break from the whining and crying. :)

I just cut about three inches off ingrids hair the other day. I had cut her little bob for a long time but recently had a friend with a salon do it. Otis gets his butchered by me also, lol! I will def. Take your vertical advice, as my horizontal cut was awful.

I think Ethan looks cute! Its amazing how a snip can make them look yrs older!

My neighbor said the same thing when she cut her son’s hair horizontally. Good thing our kids don’t give a hoot about their hair cut!
