Flashes Of June

2014 June 30
by Becky

Wasn’t it just yesterday we were sitting on a white sand beach in Florida?

June has gone by in a what feels like a minute. So I’m writing it down here, before it’s a complete blur.

Our days have been full and minds have been racing with plans, anticipation, and heat—while we had a pretty mild and rainy spring, it’s suddenly become really humid and I’m not all that thrilled about getting to be pregnant all summer.

21 Weeks Belly Pic

At 21 weeks, shorts and swim suits are not my friends.

Anyway, June started with Ethan getting accepted to a new school, one that offers an adorable summer camp which he attends 2-3 days a week. He LOVES camp. They play in water, do art projects, take walks to community gardens, and even take naps. Yes, my kid naps at school every day. It never ceases to amaze me. I arrive to find him covered with sand, paint, sweat, chalk…all the fun messy stuff his teachers somehow have the patience to manage.

I also decided it was high time I introduced Ethan to a very special St. Louis treat…

Ethans First Ted Drewes

The Peanut caught on to Ted Drewes custard after one bite. The Oreo concrete is his current fav. Having both locations so incredibly close to us is dan-ger-ous.

Speaking of food, Ethan also tried his first S’more in June. Before visiting our friend’s lake house, complete with fire pit, Ethan had only roasted marshmallows in our home fireplace…a tragedy.

First Real Smores

He was a big fan of the real thing.

On this trip we also did some fishing. I highly recommending taking your three year old fishing…in a pond that is FULL of fish.

Ethan First Fishing

Ethan kept running around telling everyone, “If you catch a fish, call me and I’ll reel it in, OK?” He knows what he wants.

This was a month of learning for Ethan. He went from not really caring all that much about his letters and numbers to becoming obsessed. We talk about letter sounds and words constantly. So I downloaded a few apps to our phone/ipad and picked up a few pre-school workbooks (at Target) to help me help him.

Handwriting Preschool Workbook

In just a couple weeks, there has been a significant improvement in Ethan’s grasp of letters and their sounds. Even his handwriting is coming along. Just like the potty training, when they want to do it, they will.

Another learning experience? The circus. I took Ethan to his first circus, Circus Flora, this month. I’ve heard circus horror stories from friends, but this one was so perfect. Right downtown, just miles from our house, behind Powell Symphony Hall, was a full, professional circus.

Circus Flora

We’ve read a few books about circuses so Ethan couldn’t wait to see the “big tent”. Circus Flora is a local organization on a somewhat small scale size-wise, but not small in the talent department. They did everything. Tight rope, trapeze, trained dogs, incredible juggling, acrobatics (on the ground AND on horse-back), and even a strong man! Nothing hack-y, all amazing. Ethan’s favorite was the double-decker bicycle dudes that road across the tight rope. The circus has wrapped up it’s season, but I highly recommend taking your kids next year!

And as if Ethan’s month wasn’t magical enough, Stu put this together for him just this past weekend…

Small Compact Backyard Swing Set

Ethan was overjoyed to help dad with the construction of this beast…it took ALL day. “It’s my own play ground!” he’s exclaimed about a hundred times. We thought this was perfect timing to get our back yard kid-friendly. With a new baby on the way, having a fun place to play right in our own yard seemed like a great idea. We bought a kit but had to modify it a bit to fit our space. We can’t wait to invite friends over to break it in!

These “flashes”, bits and pieces of a busy month, don’t even include the nursery construction…that’s a whole other post. I’ll be spending today’s nap time cleaning up drywall dust…yippee. It’s just another reason June passed by in the blink of an eye.

Everybody ready for the holiday weekend?? Fourth of July is one of my favorites. Here’s a fun project and a recipe, both perfect for this summer celebration.

My mouth drools when I think of Ted Drews.
And How could Stu manage to build the playhouse without me.
I love the model you chose……..blends with the style of the original carriage barn.
    See you next week.

What a fun and busy month of June. I too love the new playground set and I’m glad carpenter Stu is coming my way…I need a few door handles fixed and a curtain rod attached. His Handy Helper Ethan can assist.

    CU later this morning!

Can you please tell me where you got the play/swing set? It is the exact size and configuration I’m looking for.

    Thanks so much, Liz.
