Fall Activities in St. Louis — Where to Begin??

2013 October 2
by Becky

Have plans for this weekend?

We certainly do. And for next weekend. And the one after that. And we will probably be weeding through all the options through to the New Year…yep, Christmas will be here before we know it.

Countless things to do, all so close, temping, and many free! I can’t go anywhere without seeing a sign promoting a creative event so I thought I’d collect a few on one page for your planning pleasure. A few Halloween activities have made their way in there too!

Last Food Truck Friday
Oct 4, 2013

This is it…if you haven’t made it to Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park, better make plans to get there by (or before) 5pm this Friday. We’ve been at least three times, set up our picnic blanket (with some food to tide Ethan over, just supplementing with samplings from the trucks) and chairs amongst the most diverse gathering of St. Louis citizens. Neighborhood people, folks from waaaaaaay out in the county (I believe they are bussed in), and everyone in between. Kids running everywhere, bands playing (we’ve heard some pretty incredible performers here), and the food…wow. Parking is ridiculous, just count on carpooling or parking in the neighborhood and walking, lines can be long, and food does run out. Get there early and it will be an amazing evening, especially in this gorgeous weather.

Best of Missouri Market
Oct 4-6, 2013

An event I’ve attended many times in the past, I can’t wait to be there this weekend! As stated on the website, “More than 120 Missouri food producers and crafters offer fresh produce, baked goods, fresh and dried flowers, herbs, handcrafted items, baskets, wooden toys, custom jewelry and more. Enjoy music and attendance prize drawings, too! Outdoors under tents, rain or shine.” How can I sum it up any better? Not sure if I’ll take Ethan and Stu or find some girlfriends to head over with me…both options would make for a fun fall morning.

Craftoberfest @ Urban Chestnut Brewery
October 17, 2013, 5pm

This “Indie handmade market” is being held at yet another new local brewery—one we happen to love. I found an adorable postcard advertising this event while at the brand spankin’ new Rise Coffee Shop and well, I just think it sounds amazing. Urban Chestnut has an enormous beer garden that will apparently be filled with handmade and vintage goods, as well as live music, food, and fresh beer. I’m guessing it’s a family friendly event because the brewery certainly is, but would make an amazing girls night out as well. Try the Oachkatzlschwoaf…crazy name, amazing beer.

Tower Grove Farmers Market
Saturday Mornings through Nov. 3

I’m so glad we’ve got another two months of markets because I missed oh so many this summer. While the pop jets/fountain are probably done very soon (if not already), the play ground is still filled with families and the market is bustling with fall specialties. Apple cider everywhere, apples, pumpkins, gourds, and the usual delicious treats one can always expect.

Pumpkin Patches
Times and days vary.

There are plenty of options in the area, but a few include Rombach Farms (which we visited last weekend and loved), Thies Farm Pumpkinland (which we will be visiting soon), and while I’ve never been to Eckerts, I’ve heard great things and it’s kind of a St. Louis/Illionis institution.

Boo at the Zoo
October 18-30, 5:30-8:30pm, $4 members/$5 non-members/Free under 2

Just another chance for kids to wear costumes in a non-scary, not-too-dark, candy filled adventure—but with animals! Fairylands, “haunted” forests, music, crafts, and more will make this weird holiday fun for the little ones. We will be there for sure, just need to decide which night!

Big Truck Day @ The Magic House
October 12 & 13, 2013, 10:30am – 2:30pm, $15/non-member, $12/members

For your digger/dump truck/bulldozer lover, this event sounds like an impressively good time. Kids get to climb on huge machinery and play construction for the day. Admission includes a hard hat and hot dog lunch. In all honesty, this price tag scared me off a little, especially since we’ve had our own private “digger” parked about 50 yards away as the next block’s alley has been under construction for the entired six months we’ve lived here.

Twilight Tuesdays Concert @ the Missouri History Museum
October 8, 2013, 6pm

Bring a picnic and some chairs to park the fam in front of the beautifully history museum in the Central West End, just a stones throw from the Forest Park playground, Wash U. We’ve actually NEVER done this, but I’d like to get this last concert on our calendar. Dr. Zhivegas is the band at this

OttertoberFest @ the St. Louis Zoo
October 5-6, 12-13 – 10:30am to 3pm, FREE admission

This event seems like the epitome of “Family-Friendly” when it comes to celebrating Oktoberfest parent-style. Traditional German biergartens, food, live music, keeper chats about otters, and kids’ activities while surrounded by animals?! Count me in. Sure my tolerance is exactly zero since my surgery, but it doesn’t mean I won’t delight in having myself a brew at the zoo.

Haunted Hayloft @ Purina Farms
October 18, 19, 20 and 25, 26, 27, 4:30-7:30 Fri & Sat, 2:30-5:30 Sun

This apparently not scary event features all the traditional Halloween fun: trick or treating, puppet shows, costume contest, pumpkin decorating, and the regular fun stuff that goes along with Purina Farms. Sad story? We’ve NEVER been!! It’s at the top of my list, we were just waiting for the good weather to arrive. I see it happening very very soon.

Food Truck Fest @ 4 Hands Brewery
**RESCHEDULED!! New date is Nov. 2, 2013 starting at 4pm

Another event I’ve never attended but man does it sound like fun. It’s described as extremely family friendly and, since the owners have young kids, I believe it will be just that. I’m planning to be out of town this weekend, surgery recovery permitting, but someone please go, drink delicious local brews, eat fabulous food out of a truck, and let me know about how fun it was!

Not So Scary Halloween @ The Magic House
Fri, Oct. 18 & 25, 9:30am – 9:00pm; Sat, Oct 19 & 26, 9:30am – 5:30pm, Sun, Oct 20 & 27, 11:00am – 5:30pm

I’m thinking this will be a must-do Halloween activity. Ethan loves the Magic House and I think he’ll really get a good idea of safe Halloween fun from being in this anti-fake-blood environment. All I know it he’ll need a comfortable costume to be able to play and climb with all the other costume clad kiddos. Apparently there will be storybook characters?

Now we just need to settle on a costume…

Any suggestions??

So that’s a good start for October! I gathered these events from seeing posters, billboards (literally the only good thing about the abundance of big ugly billboards in STL), and at Forest Park Forever.

What events are you attending? Please share!!

4Hands food truck feast is lots of fun and family friendly as mentioned (even had fall crafts for kids last year). If you end up out of town look out for the next one in Spring! If you haven’t had a chance you have to try Morning Glory their sweet potato beer and Chocolate milk stout is back for an extended season too : )
