Ethan’s Birch Tree Nursery

2011 March 28

So many people have given us such nice compliments on Ethan’s nursery, so I thought I’d dedicate a post to it. It really turned out exactly as I had hoped, and I couldn’t be happier.

I plan to add a few owl decals to the walls, sitting on branches of course, but haven’t decided on where they should go yet.

I started with a mood board using pictures pulled from all over the web:

Then I looked everywhere for furniture I liked, tracked down the paint I loved, and even found those puppy dog tail hooks on eBay.  I painted the walls with the base color, then enlisted the help of my friend Liz to paint the trees. Without her help sketching and aligning them on the wall, I’m sure they would not look at good as they do. We used a projector to get the placement right, then dove in with the paint. Once we started putting brushes in motion, we realized it wasn’t as hard as we thought!

Dewey was very interested in what was going on, so he made it in the picture.

And here is the finished product!

The crib came from Babies R Us (my LEAST favorite store)…I actually found it on Target.com, but the same thing was cheaper at BRU.

The striped bed skirt was made by my mom, along with the adorable little pillow on the chair. We found the fabric on FabricWorm.com. The fitted sheet is from Target.

The owl mobile was made by my friend Maddie…it is from a pattern she found on Etsy.com. Ethan loved it when he was a tiny baby…he watched the owls slowly drift by. But then he needed something a little more bold, so I copied took inspiration from the web and created this very fun card stock and fishing line mobile.

Stu and I made a one day there-and-back trip to the Chicago Ikea for this Expedit bookshelf, baskets, floor lamp, and, my absolute favorite thing, the Knappa ceiling light. I’ve been wanting to put this light somewhere in my house FOREVER and it could not be more prefect in the nursery. The quilt on the back of the chair was made by Susie Luehrs, a family friend.

Some of my favorite childhood memories involve the books my family read before putting me to bed. We had the most amazing childrens book collection and I couldn’t imagine how I would begin to recreate it for Ethan. Luckily, my parents stored every book and brought them to St. Louis as soon as I announced I was pregnant. This is just a very small sampling of the three-rubbermaid-tub-sized stash.

The Hemnes dresser and box shelves are also from Ikea. The dresser provides the perfect amount of storage for all our baby gear. There is no closet in this room, so we made sure to get a big dresser. We are also very happy with our decision to go with the grey-brown instead of white…it adds some texture to the room.

My neighbor gave us the changing pad, which works out perfectly. We almost always change diapers in here…it’s just easier. I have my water bowl for the cloth wipes in the tiered bins, and you can see the cloth diaper hamper in the far corner…it’s just a swing top trash can.

Last, but certainly not least, I reframed this needlepoint wall hanging made by my mom just before I was born.

We are so happy with the final product! It’s bright and cheery but also relaxing. The Peanut seems to love it too. We had so much fun creating this fun space for our little guy and can’t wait to do it all over again for the next stage of his life. That is, if I ever get over my Robin’s Egg Blue and orange obsession...

Super cute!! How far is the Ikea from you guys?? We are about an hour from the one in Shaumburg outside Chicago and I hate driving there. I was so spoiled in MI b/c the Ikea was 15 minutes away!!

I love those trees, and the blue looks calming. Can’t wait to have a house where we can do what we want with it!

Thanks!! The Bollingbrook Ikea is about 4 hours from us. It was a long day of driving, but we left SUPER early on a Saturday and were home before 7pm. And we spent plenty of time at the store. I hope to someday live closer to an Ikea!!

I love it! Would you mind telling me what color the wall paint is?

    • April 13, 2011

Sure!! It is Benjamin Moore’s Robins NEST (not Robins Egg as I originally responded)…I screw that up every time!

love what you did to your nursery! where did you get the chair? is it a rocker? love the color!!

    • April 13, 2011

Thanks!!! It’s a rocker AND a glider. It was a little pricey, but totally worth it because I use it a lot to breast feed and we rock the little man to sleep every night in it. It is from a local store called Good Works (http://www.goodworksfurniture4u.com/). It’s the Cole chair. You get to choose the fabric. I’m sure they would ship to you because they have to order it anyway, takes about 6 weeks. I was nervous about the orange but it is perfect and super fun!

I am in LOVE! I love everything about this room! What are the paint colours you used ( i noticed 4 colours on the board) what are they called? What a cozy room, I’d love a room like that for myself!

    • April 15, 2011

Thank you!!! The wall color is Benjamin Moore’s Robin’s Nest. The other colors on the mood board were just general…not swatches. I just knew I wanted to incorporate them in the room somehow. So glad you like it!! I took inspiration from all over the web…you can do it in a snap too! Good Luck!!!

    Hi Becky,

I’m a friendly stranger. :) But I need HELP! I love love love your mobile and all the other circle mobile tutorials I find are different and more uniform. Would you hate to give me a little cheat sheet on how you made? I’m kind of a #needinstructionsdummy. Also, wondered the same thing about your cornice creating?

      Hi and thanks Kelly!!
My mobile was pretty much trial and error, but it did turn out great and I’ve been meaning to post a tutorial on it…you hve given me the push that I need! And the cornice idea came together with the help of http://www.domesticadventures.com. There is a link in her side bar to her cornice post. I’ll get to writing the mobile post ASAP and alert you when it’s up there :)
