Ethan: 16 Months Old

2012 May 3
by Becky

In the midst of our traveling in the Midwest, I’ve become very behind in my blogging, and am several days late posting about Ethan’s 16th month!

Yes, we are still in Scottsbluff, Nebraska visiting Grandma and Grandpa on “The Farm” after a whirlwind bachelorette party in Denver and bridal shower here in SB just two days later (I’m working on the shower pictures…they are coming soon!). But I can’t miss telling you about what Ethan is up to now that he is 16 months old.

  • He’s walking!!  Everywhere! He gets faster and more confident every single day. Running is not far off.
  • He’s talking more and more, even on command! He says: “hi”, “dog”, “dada”, “mama” (not as often as dada), “shoes”, “uh oh”, “up”, “more”, “ducks”, “apple”, “hot” (as in “hotdog”), “socks” and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.
  • He’s still taking two naps a day when we can. While he can survive with just one, he just loves that morning snooze so much! So his schedule includes at least 12 hours of sleep every night (7pm to 7am), then a one hour nap at around 9am and a two-ish hour nap at around 1:30pm. If we skip the morning nap, he sleeps for two-three hours at 1pm. He loves his sleep!
  • He is pretty attached to his blankets, but only during sleep times. He likes us to lay him down on his back, then drape a blanket over him while he holds his feet in the air. When the blanket brushes his face, it initiates the sleep sequence almost instantaneously. He will indulge us in a little peek-a-boo from time to time too. His favorite blanket was made my mom’s long time friend Laurie.
  • He wants to play with anything other than toys. Rocks, spoons, cups, dirt, paper, etc. If it’s not a toy, he’s interested.
  • Ethan is still an animal lover. As soon as he sees a dog or cat, he gets very excited, lets out a little scream of delight, and charges in for some pets. We know, we need to teach him to be careful because not all animals are nice. BUT, we always screen the friendliness of the animal before letting Little Man loose so it’s been ok up to this point. He’s also been having fun checking in on Grandma and Grandpa’s baby guinea fowl that have been living in their house for the past month.
  • He eats everything. Meat, pasta, fruit, rice, bread, tortillas, chocolate, all dairy, and even had his first sucker at our recent visit to the doctor’s office (I watched him like a hawk through the whole sucker experience—talk about chocking hazard!). He’s a little more picky about veggies. He will usually eat defrosted peas and carrots, edamame, tomatoes, and anything on the mushy/soft side. He loves veggies from minestrone soup. So any ideas for incorporating more veggies are welcome!
  • He loves opening and closing doors, as well as taking small items out of one container to place them in another container. He then loves to take the container and dump it out all over the floor, preferably a wood or tile surface so it will make a lot of noise. He can be entertained with a tupperware container and some legos for quite a while.
  • This boy LOVES to swing! We rarely make it through the playground without taking a turn on the swing. We even ordered a Little Tikes swing for the The Farm that Grandpa had all hooked up and ready before we arrived this week.
  • He’s obsessed with going up and down stairs, which just thrills me to death (NOT!). Grandma has been diligently working with him on sitting down and going backwards down steps, which Ethan is really started to get the hang of. Sometimes he starts too far away from the step, which is pretty cute.
  • He is a sand and water baby. Put him in a sandbox and he’s happy. Put him near a shallow basin of water and he’ll be entertained. I can’t wait to set up the water activity table waiting for him at home!

So that’s some of what Ethan is doing lately. I’m sure I’ve missed about 20 things, but there is a diaper change is in order and a dinner to be made. Funny how even on “vacation”, things never slow down.
