Ditching the Diaper Bag…or Not?

Around April I decided I could not carry diaper bag ONE. MORE. DAY.

After 2.5 years of slinging the olive nylon over my shoulders, I was done and really never wanted to see it again. I mean, that’s a LONG time to haul the same bag. It’s got stains, tears, and was looking pretty worn out on that Spring day when I walked into Target and decided to end it all.

I bought this:

A ginormous faux-leather number that could house everything a toddler could need, which is still kind of a lot.

I’m not one of those moms who can leave the house with just keys, wallet, cell phone, and a diaper. I’ve tried and every time I’m filled with regret. I’ll get somewhere and realize Ethan needs a snack or we’ll be standing in line at the grocery check out and I’ll wish we had some stickers to occupy our time. Or The Peanut will inevitably have a giant poop and need to be changed, which means needing wipes, a fresh cloth diaper, and the wet bag.

Good thing this behemoth could contain all of these things and more (nail file, hand sanitizer, a couple toys, and that shirt I need to return).

And it worked for a while. I actually got many compliments on my $29 purchase. But after just a couple short months of hooking the heavy handles over my shoulder and stuffing it into the almost-too-small space under our stroller, I’m throwing in the towel.

I want the diaper bag back.

I want to carry all my crap comfortably without the need to dig whenever an item is needed.

I want it’s stretch strap to evenly distribute the weight across my back.

I want to hook those cool little clasps around the stroller handle for our walks to the farmers market.

Having the diaper bag back is like breathing fresh air again. I missed it so. I no longer notice the wear and tear, it looks fabulous (it’s a Go Gaga, find them here).

And it fits every single thing I want to have with me at all times.

In all, 20 items. I know. It’s a lot. But I’d rather carry more and have what I need when I need it instead of carrying a small bag and wishing I had all this stuff. Think Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day (one of my favorite movies).

Looks like the diaper bag is here to stay until diapers are a thing of the past. Yes, the wet back and cloth diaper takes up a little more room then a disposable that can be tossed in the trash, but it’s not enough to deter me from using cloth as much as possible…a slight hassle I’m used to and love doing.

And at this point, potty training feels like a million years away…the kid doesn’t care about even the poopiest of poopy diapers. So. Gross.

When I head out without a diaper-wearing buddy, I take something a little smaller

Actually, WAY smaller.

Two years ago I had a craving for a red purse. I walked into my favorite consignment store in Old Town (Mint Condition) and found this gem gently used for $30. It’s the first “designer” purse I’ve ever owned and I use it constantly. Phone, keys, wallet. All I need for a night out or running errands on my own.

So we’re back to the diaper bag. And I’m OK with that.

How long did you carry your diaper bag? Did you love it?

I might have to get your highly recommended diaper bag— I hate ours!! Big and rectangular and cumbersome. I purchased it for its messenger bag gender neutrality, but I just hate it. Having been lusting after this $350 bag, but that’s because I’m a crazy person.

That is a LOT to spend, but if you use it every day for 3 years, pretty justifiable. But check out the Go Gaga! It’s great and my husband loves it too. Good luck!!

You know me, I love purses and especially that beautiful brown one!! Someday you’ll be free of diapers (I promise) and can carry it. Otherwise your green one is perfect!

Still using mine and can’t even think of not having it yet! (Maybe for quick trips out I go without it, but not usually…). We also have those same yellow truck toys (the set of 5, right??). Ah boys.

My good friend sewed mine b/c she is super awesome like that, another reason I can’t part with it quite yet – too special!

WOW. Your friend’s shop is adorable!!! And yes, the truck is from the $5.99 set that my uncle gifted. Ethan is OBSESSED with his “Uncle Bob Trucks”. They are my go-t0 boy gift from here on out!
