Date Night Baby Swap

No, not THAT kind of swap! Geez.

I’m talking about the babysitting swap we set up with our neighbors, Cara and Todd. The idea came to Cara and I as we were walking the kiddos around the neighborhood and commiserating about paying babysitters to watch our babies while they sleep. We both have kids that are like rocks after 7pm—they don’t move.

All we want is one night a month to head out for dinner, drinks, or over to a friend’s house. And we thought Thursday would be easier then trying to schedule around weekend plans.

So last Thursday night, Cara came over around 7:15pm, after Ethan was fast asleep. Stu and I headed our for our third date since Little Man arrived. Cara had plans to hang out on the couch, check email, read a book, and watch some TV.

It was a nasty, rainy night, so eating outside was not in the cards. No matter, Stu and I walked down the street to a local bar that promised fabulous oysters and cold beer. Sold.

I didn’t even know what to do with myself! I felt so naked without Ethan in tow. But after a few minutes I was able to relax and it felt good to feel young and ‘free’ again.

For an after dinner drink, we headed across the street to a very cool pub I’ve been wanting to try, Virtue Feed & Grain. It completely exceeded my expectations. Not only was the place incredibly designed using many parts of the original building, but due to the owner’s expert ‘mixology’ skills, the drinks were out of this world. I had a perfect gin martini—my first in a very long time.

Next Thursday I’m on sleepy baby duty for Cara and Todd’s bundle of cuteness, Lyla. Like Ethan, Lyla is a super sleeper which means I’ll have lots of blogging, iMovie, and Photoshop time while the folks have a fun night out.

We have found a very nice babysitter for weekends and day time appointments, but once a month this swap set up is going to be a nice money saver. We are so lucky to have such great neighbors with whom we can do this!

Anyone else do babysitting swaps?

so lucky!! We were going to do this with friends but neither of our kids really sleeps totally well…but if they did, oh man, that would be awesome, i would totally take a couple hours reading a book in a quiet house (with no football on tv, thank you brendan…)
