Back Update and Other Good Stuff—Like Fall

2013 September 25
by Becky

First off, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check in, all the moms (complete strangers AND new friends) who have offered to lift Ethan into and out of swings at the park, and the pop-bys (especially ones who head over with well-intended organic baked goods left on top of cars).

After talking (extensively, he’s so sick of hearing about it) with Stu, we’ve decided I AM better after surgery.

The pain is less severe and I never “freeze up” (do the hobble-walk for 10 steps) after getting out of my car or up from a chair—I was so used to that happening it took me a while to realize it wasn’t. Oh, and those “lightening bolts” of pain shooting through my back and down my leg when I cough or sneeze? A thing of the past.

That, my friends, is called progress.
(The positivity in this place is palpable.)

Today, while heading to the playground at Francis Park, I told Ethan I could only lift him in and out of the swings ONE time because I’m not supposed to lift him. Without skipping a beat he replied “You’ve got to bend your knees when you pick me up mom.” Seriously? He hears everything.

I’m honestly just so happy to be able to take care of Ethan and get around on my own.

And oh man are good things happening. As Ethan would exclaim while pointing at brown, crunchy leaves, “It’s Fall!!” He has this “seasons” thing all figured out and is, just like last year, in love with all the pumpkins and gourds at every store, restaurant, and front porch. We’ve also been collecting pine cones and leaves for…something. Not sure what yet. But it will be great.

He even slept with his “pumpkin” (a yellow acorn squash which we ate for dinner that night) yesterday for nap. The kid won’t let a sheet or blanket touch his bed, but a gourd is A-OK. Go figure. Oh and what are those things hanging in the background????! More on those later…

I’ve gone so far as to pull out the Halloween books…in September. ME. The Halloween hater. I’m honestly more excited about Fall and Halloween this year then Christmas! Sure this could change on December 1, but right now we are out in the Fall gloriousness every moment possible. At the moment we are on track for Ethan to be a train conductor for Halloween…his request and we have all the makings of a costume, so that’s done (until I find something irresistible at a store or on Pinterest).

I’m craving roasted winter vegetables, apple butter, cider, movies by the fire, and a hay ride…back pain or not THAT is happening very very soon. Two places we’ve found fall flavors this week are Pint Size Bakery and Russell’s on Macklind. OMG about covers it.

We had apple picking in our sights for last weekend but figured that probably wasn’t on my “do nothing” list from the doc so I held back…hope people leave some for us in a couple weeks. Any STL people been to PumpkinLand at Thies Farm in Creve Coeur? Well, the Creation Station lady at the Museum of Transportation (AKA the most kid-centric woman on the planet) raved about it so we’re going. Yes, we have already been back to see the trains—except it was a million degrees outside so Ethan was more into the blocks this time around.

Which lead me to this purchase…which may not have been a super good idea to assemble in front of Ethan because now I’m not all that sure he knows their purpose. Keeps talking about “opening them up” after I carefully fold each one together.

I was going to get the wood ones but more than once they came crashing down from towering heights threatening to take out any toes, fingers, or heads below so the cardboard just seemed more doable for home and less-supervised use.

Funny thing, the less I move, the worse I feel, so we just keep moving. At least two wandering walks around the neighborhood per day and at least one adventure in between…Dewey is living the life of a dog who gets walked again.

This weekend should be packed full due to our kitchen being retiled…the lower level of our house will be uninhabitable for at least two days, if not three, so we will be out and about for sure. Can’t WAIT to see the new tile on that floor.

I don’t always like sharing other people’s news, but I’m so elated that I just must announce my dear friends Lara and Ryan have twin baby girls, born September 17, safe at home!! Zoe and Maia are absolutely gorgeous and it’s taking every ounce of strength (and the constant pain in my butt) to keep me from checking prices for flights to DC for some double-snuggle time with those girls and their big brother Luke. Congratulations guys!!!

And here concludes the “Year of the Twins” we’ve experienced in 2013. Three friends, three sets of twins, all here and healthy.

I’m thrilled to hear your back is getting better.

The picture of Ethan sleeping with his sharky and pumpkin squash is adorable. I miss him and his wonderful personality.

I too love this time of the year. Not ready for snow and freezing temps, but right now the weather is perfect.

Anxious to see “those things hanging in the background” and the new floor.

Oh my gosh, we just went to the Transportation Museum on Tuesday and Ms. Linda told us ALL about Pumpkinland (we are going this weekend!). I told her that I’m going to adopt her as my kids STL Grandma and she teared up. She’s something else.

OMG you ate Ethan’s “pumpkin”.! I almost fell out of my chair in shock. So funny. So glad to hear you’re feeling better.
