A Letter to My Little Man
On His First First Birthday

2011 December 29
by Becky

Dear Ethan,

Today is your first birthday.

I am overwhelmed with emotions about this day, and have been for the last four months while anticipating it. I’m trying to hold it together and not get overly emotional about you edging toward toddler-hood and away from being a baby. I look at you now and cannot believe that you grew from a tiny, three pound peanut to the 18 pound, handome, sweet boy you are today.

I think back to the day you were born and all I remember is happiness. The truth is, we were very scared on your birth day because you were eight weeks early. You were supposed to be born at the end of February…well, you know the story by now. All we wanted was for you to be safe, healthy, and in our arms—luckily that is exactly what you were at 4:40pm on December 29th, 2010.

So what are you like at exactly one year old? You have the cutest chubby cheeks and the biggest blue eyes that are always open so wide. You are so interested in everything going on around you. You love animals and are never scared to reach out to give pets. You will go to anyone—you aren’t shy. Your favorite foods are yogurt, mangos, and pancakes. Your favorite toys are your wooden hammer and your activity table. You can crawl like the wind and can stand up with the help of furniture or toys. You love music and have started to “dance” to songs you like. You sleep 12 hours almost every night (thank you!) and you love reading books before bed. You say “Uh-oh” perfectly and we can hear you starting to figure out “Mama” and “Dada.” You’ve started waving and put your arms up when you want to be held. And just this week you started pointing at things you like.

Your dad and I can’t believe how amazing you are. Your expressions, sounds, the way you rock an outfit, and the peaceful way you sleep—we are in awe of it all. We have whole conversations about how cute and smart you are. And we aren’t the only ones who think you are adorable. We are constantly stopped on the street and in stores so strangers can admire you. You usually impress them with a heart-melting smile and sometimes a wave.

You have been through so much in your first year. The hospital, coming home, moving across the country, a new neighborhood, getting seven teeth, traveling (four roundtrip flights!), learning to crawl and stand, and so much more. You handled it all like a pro. We feel so lucky to have such a good boy who can roll with the punches—you have made all the changes easier then we ever thought they would be.

So today, as we celebrate your first birthday at grandma and grandpa’s house in Scottsbluff, I can’t help but be amazed at how you have changed our lives—my life—in so many incredible ways. For years I wondered if I even wanted to start a family and now it scares me that the thought ever crossed my mind. Life is so much better with you in it. You make me strive to be a better person every day. I can’t imagine a world without you in it.

I love you so much my little man, and I am so proud to be your mom.

Happy Birthday!!!
